How To Organize A Community Garden

Community gardens are becoming more popular, especially in urban and suburban areas. With the price of food increasing every day, more people are turning to gardening to grow their own food. Many people also like the idea of having fresh, pesticide-free fruits and vegetables, but simply do not have the land in which to plant a garden. If you are interested in having a garden but don’t have the space, why not organize one in your community?

You will need to find a place that can donate land to your cause. Many cities and towns are very willing to donate the land, or you can ask a local business in your area. Once you have the land space available, you will need to pull your community together to start the garden. The best way to advertise is through sending flyers home through your local schools. You want to be sure that the whole community gets involved and the children will be excited to bring the flyers home to their parents. Have a meeting to discuss ideas with the people that are interested and to start fundraising. You will need donations to help clear the land, buy tools and seeds and to install a garden shed.

Ask for volunteers to help with the fundraising. You would be surprised to find out that many businesses will donate to their local communities. You may be able to get a garden shed, tools and seed from a local home improvement store and plant seedlings from a local farm. Also, you may be able to get someone to help out with the initial clearing of the land with a tractor. It is important to get local businesses involved because they will continue to support your cause year after year.

A community garden does not have to be for fruits and vegetables only. If you are more interested in growing a flower garden, you can follow these same procedures to get one started in your area.
